Founding in 1862
Penn Center was established in 1862 on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, making it one of the first schools for formerly enslaved people in the United States. Founded by northern missionaries and supported by the Penn Association of Philadelphia, it became a model for Freedmen's Bureau education across the South.
The Gullah Connection
Unlike many Freedmen's schools that imposed Northern curriculum and language, Penn Center recognized and valued Gullah culture. Teachers learned Gullah to communicate with students, and the school incorporated local knowledge into lessons. This respect for Gullah identity helped preserve the language and traditions that might otherwise have been suppressed.
Educational Innovation
