Gullah Deviled Crab Recipe

Crab meat stuffed back into the shell with seasoned breadcrumbs and baked golden. This Gullah deviled crab recipe is a Lowcountry appetizer tradition.

Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh blue crab meat
- 6 crab shells (cleaned) or ramekins
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup onion, finely diced
- 1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably stale)
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp butter, melted (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375Β°F. Pick through crab meat to remove any shell fragments.
- Melt 2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook onion and bell pepper until softened, about 4 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.
- Remove from heat. In a large bowl, combine cooked vegetables, crab meat, 3/4 cup breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, mustard, Worcestershire, Old Bay, cayenne, parsley, and lemon juice. Mix gently.
- Season with salt. Stuff mixture into crab shells or ramekins.
- Mix remaining 1/4 cup breadcrumbs with 2 tbsp melted butter. Sprinkle over the tops.
- Bake 18-20 minutes until golden brown and heated through. Serve with lemon wedges.
π‘ Pro Tip: Fresh blue crab is traditional, but canned crab meat works. Serve as an appetizer or a light main course with a side salad.
