Gullah Baked Mac and Cheese Recipe

Ingredients
- 1 lb elbow macaroni
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup Gruyere or Swiss cheese, shredded
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp butter, melted (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375Β°F. Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
- Cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt 4 tbsp butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Slowly whisk in milk and cream. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Stir in cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Gruyere until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and cayenne.
- Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine. Pour into prepared baking dish.
- In a small bowl, combine panko with 2 tbsp melted butter. Sprinkle over the top.
- Bake 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
