Gullah Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Silky, spiced sweet potato filling in a flaky crust. This Gullah sweet potato pie recipe is the dessert that every Lowcountry Sunday dinner ends with.

Ingredients
- 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 large potatoes)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp ginger
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- Whipped cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F. Prick pie crust with fork and pre-bake for 10 minutes. Set aside.
- Boil sweet potatoes until very tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, cool, peel, and mash until smooth.
- In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, melted butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Mix well.
- Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.
- Stir in evaporated milk and flour until smooth and well combined.
- Pour filling into pre-baked pie crust. Smooth the top.
- Bake 45-50 minutes until center is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.
- Cool completely on a wire rack. Serve at room temperature with whipped cream.
