Lowcountry Frogmore Stew Recipe

The Lowcountry boil. Shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes — a community feast on any given Sunday. This Frogmore stew recipe is Gullah Geechee tradition.

Ingredients
- 2 lbs large shrimp, unpeeled
- 1 lb smoked sausage (andouille or kielbasa), sliced
- 6 ears corn, halved
- 1.5 lbs small red potatoes
- 1 large onion, quartered
- 4 cloves garlic, smashed
- 1/4 cup Old Bay seasoning
- 2 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp cayenne pepper
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 lemon, halved
- Melted butter for serving
- Hot sauce for serving
Instructions
- Fill a large stockpot with 4 quarts of water. Add Old Bay seasoning, salt, cayenne, bay leaves, onion, garlic, and lemon halves. Bring to a rolling boil.
- Add potatoes and cook for 10 minutes.
- Add corn and sausage. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Add shrimp and cook for 3-4 minutes until pink. Do not overcook.
- Drain immediately. Discard bay leaves, onion, garlic, and lemon.
- Pour the entire contents onto a large newspaper-covered table or platter. Serve with melted butter and hot sauce.
💡 Pro Tip: Frogmore Stew is named after Frogmore, South Carolina on St. Helena Island. It's meant to be eaten with your hands, gathered around a table with family.
